The West Highland White Terrier (commonly shortened to Westie) is a breed of dog from Scotland with a distinctive white harsh coat and somewhat soft white undercoat. It is a medium-sized terrier, though with longer legs than other Scottish terriers. It has a white double coat of fur which fills out the dog's face, giving it a rounded appearance. The Westie is intelligent, quick to learn, and can be good with children, but does not always tolerate rough handling. It is an energetic, boisterous, and social breed with a high prey drive, having been bred to hunt small rodents at places such as farms, and needs regular exercise of around one hour per day. The modern breed is descended from a number of pre-20th century breeding programmes of white terriers in Scotland. Edward Donald Malcolm, 16th Laird of Poltalloch, is credited with the creation of the modern breed from his Poltalloch Terrier but did not want to be known as such.

A cousin of the Cairn Terrier, other related breeds included the Roseneath Terrier (bred by George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll) and Pittenweem Terriers (bred by Dr Americ Edwin Flaxman). The Westie was given its modern name for the first time in 1908, with recognition by major kennel clubs occurring around the same time. The breed remains very popular in the United Kingdom, with multiple wins at Cruft's, and has been in the top third of all breeds in the United States since the 1960s. Several breed-specific and non-specific health problems appear in the breed, including a condition in young dogs nicknamed "Westie jaw", which causes an overgrowth of bone in the jaw of the dog. It can also be prone to skin disorders, with a breed-specific condition called hyperplastic dermatosis occurring.

The West Highland White Terrier, or "Westie" as they are commonly called, is a breed of dog bred to hunt foxes and other small game animals. The first recorded mention of the Westie was in 1842 when Sir Robert Gordon wrote about them in his book Dogs of Scotland. It is believed that the West Highland White Terrier was developed from other white terrier breeds such as the Cairn Terrier and Scottish Terrier.

In the early 1900s, the Westie became a popular pet in England and America. The breed was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908. Today, West Highland White Terriers are popular pets and show dogs. They are also used as working dogs in many different fields, such as search and rescue, drug detection, and assistance dogs for the blind or deaf.

If you're looking for a spunky, affectionate companion, a West Highland White Terrier puppy for sale just might be the perfect fit. It's important to do your research and make sure this is the right breed for you and your lifestyle regarding characteristics, activity level, disposition, training, and grooming needs.

Characteristics

A Westie puppy for sale is a small, compact, sturdy, well-balanced dog. They have a short, dense coat that is predominantly white with some light brown or yellow markings on the head. Westie puppies have dark, soulful eyes and tails that are docked about halfway down their length.

Don't be fooled by their adorable faces and white coats! A Westie puppy truly is a Terrier through and through. Their double coats are actually not soft and fluffy but rough to the touch, and they are tough, strong, and hardy little dogs.

Activity Level

If you're considering a "Westie puppy for sale near me," you may be wondering if they are a good lap dog. Well, yes and no! Westie puppies for sale are very active, playful dogs that need plenty of exercise, but they are also content to cuddle up on the couch with their owner at the end of the day after a long day of playing hard and running around. They much prefer to be on the go, exploring and playing. If you're an active family who loves the outdoors, a Westie may just be the perfect fit.

Because of their high energy level and independent nature, West Highland White Terrier puppies may not be as tolerant with children as some other breeds when it comes to rowdy play. However, Westie puppies can do well if they are raised together from a young age.

Disposition

A Westie puppy's personality is often described as independent, self-confident, and determined. A West Highland White Terrier puppy can be standoffish with strangers but is devoted and loving to its family. They can be quick to bark when they sense something unusual, but they are generally good-natured with people and other animals.

Training

When looking for "Westie puppies for sale near me," you know they'll need some training, but just how much? Some Westie puppies are very independent and stubborn, while others are eager to please and quick to learn. Like with any breed, the key to successful training is consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement.

When it comes to socialization, a West Highland White Terrier puppy for sale can be a bit more challenging than some other breeds. They tend to be reserved around strangers and can be quite territorial. It's important to start socializing your Westie puppy as early as possible so they can learn to interact calmly and appropriately with other people and animals. With proper training and socialization, Westies can make great additions to any family.

Grooming Needs & Care

Grooming a West Highland White Terrier puppy is not difficult, but there are a few things you need to know to keep your Westie looking his best. Westie puppies for sale are relatively low-maintenance compared to other breeds, but they do require some regular grooming.

If you are searching for a "West Highland White Terrier puppy for sale near me," you may be wondering if they are hypoallergenic. The answer is yes! While they are considered hypoallergenic and shed very little, they still require regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles from forming.

Westie puppies also need their nails trimmed on a regular basis. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, you can take your Westie to a groomer or vet for help. Westies also need to have their teeth brushed regularly to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. This is especially important if your Westie is prone to dental problems.
